A coastal wetland system just outside Negombo, home to herons, kingfishers and monitor lizards moving through a quiet network of mangrove channels minutes from the airport. Its proximity makes it an easy, low-key addition to a first or last day in the country, requiring only a short boat excursion rather than a dedicated day trip. It’s a genuinely underused resource given how close it sits to where most journeys begin, offering a first taste of Sri Lanka’s wildlife before travellers have even left the coast. A single morning is enough to see the wetland’s main channels and their resident birdlife.
