A cave temple complex carved from a single granite outcrop in the 1st century BC, its largest chamber holding over 150 Buddha images beneath ceilings painted and repainted across two thousand years of continuous religious use. The cool, dim interiors make for a natural, atmospheric counterpoint to Sigiriya’s exposed climb and the two sites are almost always paired on the same day given how close they sit to one another. Late afternoon light inside the caves brings out the depth of the mural work in a way that midday visits tend to miss. It appears across every one of our collections, most often as an en route stop on the way into or out of Sigiriya.
